POCUS AAA/Aorta Exam
Clinical point-of-care questions:
1. Is the aorta >3 cm in diameter?
2. Are the iliac arteries >1.5 cm in diameter?
Teaching objectives:
1. Identify aorta in transverse and longitudinal (left side of spine, pulsatile, thick wall).
2. Measure aorta from outer to outer wall (don't want to miss a mural thrombus!, measure both width and A-P diameter).
3. Identify iliac artery bifurcation and measure diameter of iliac arteries (most AAAs are infrarenal)
Clinical case:
65 year old undocumented male without insurance who has extensive smoking history who cannot afford AAA screening. What can you do for him in clinic?
with history of smoking 1 pack per day for 40 years who presents with acute onset abdominal pain.
