Pediatric Urgent/Emergent Care Month

Dr. Penny Brandt Dr. Brian Moore (peds ED) Dr. Jennifer Rael
|
N
|
Peds ER and Urgent Care combined with neonatal resuscitation.
Note: as of Jul 2014: Santa Fe and Silver City have started having their interns also do Peds ED, so any Peds ED experience would likely have to occur when our other learners don't have shifts.
|
Doable and high value. Takes some leg work to coordinate the experience, since it takes place within 3 areas: the Peds ED, Peds urgent care, and NICU. Those areas tend to have a good amount of other learners, so the key is making a schedule to work shifts less covered by others, including nights and weekends. Example schedule attached (from previous resident). The NICU resuscitation is done best by coordinating with the NICU NP: times without peds residents.

Mary Alice Scott, MD mscott2@ad.nmsu.edu
Laura Parajon, MD
LParajon@salud.unm.edu
|
Y/N |
Refugee/asylee curriculum |
- Residents should contact Dr. Danielle Pattison with a cc to Dr. Mary Alice Scott (both of their emails are cced here) and Dr. Laura Parajon about when they would like to come at 3 MONTHS in advance
- Once they are approved by Danielle Pattison, then Dolores will put the resident in the schedule and let all parties know (Dr. Pattions, Dr. Scott, and Dr. Parajon) what the exact schedule of the resident will be, including arrival time to Las Cruces and departure time from Las Cruces. This is important because of the time it takes to schedule with the multiple partners that Danielle and Mary Alice work with to schedule the border rotation
- There will be no border rotation slots during holidays between the week of Thanksgiving and New Years because there is very little going on during those times at the border
- Rotations should be no less than 14 days and can be up to 30 days
- The border rotation does not support 1 week rotations

There are always 2 CNMs on, they either have 12 hr shifts or 24 hr shifts. They are not required to have a trainee with them, so coordinating in advance is really helpful. That said - the schedule can sometimes change month to month, so I am not sure how far in advance residents are able to realistically plan. The CNMs who were willing to have residents were there on Wednesdays (Rachel Garcia 505-688-9509, and Amy Macleod amy.macleod@lovelace.com) , Thursday (Brenda Beck, brenda.beck@lovelace.com), Saturdays (Candace Reid, 505-280-5008, candace.reid@lovelace.com). Charge nurse at the CNM Westside Clinic - Jenny White - 505-727-4534 helps with contact info for the CNMs. Main contact for FM residents- Brenda Beck (brenda.beck@lovelace.com). Shifts are 8am-8pm (or 8am-8am if on a 24 hr shift)
|
Meals:
I got free meals from the cafeteria while I was there - when you check out tell them you are a physician and then you just sign a paper with the amount that your food cost.
Badge:
If residents have a hard time getting badge access, they can get a physician temp badge each day that they are there by going to the security office (behind the cafeteria), telling the security officer that they are a resident physician on L+D and need a temp badge, and giving them their drivers license. They get their drivers license back at the end of the shift when they turn in their badge.
Parking:
You can park anywhere (I never had a problem). The Hospital is on San Mateo and Montgomery (Lovelace Women’s Hospital). To get to L+D, Go to the south side entrance, park in the lot, walk in the entrance and take a left, go down the hall until you see the elevators, go up to the third floor, and the desk of L+D is in front of you. They CNMs usually do sign out on the second floor GI conference room but it changes sometimes - so I recommend that the residents reach out to whoever they are working with to see where they want to meet.
